Old (2021)
I'm not a big fan of M Night Shyamalan, but I have seen some of his movies and the ones I have seen were quite a treat. I watched "The Village" without watching the trailer and I was very pleased with the twisted ending. The "Unbreakable" trilogy was very underrated and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So today, I took a deep dive into one of his latest movies called "Old". Spoilers ahead, for those who hasn't seen the movie!
The movie is focused on the family of Guy and Prisca Cappa. The two, along with their children Maddox and Trent Cappa, decided to go on a vacation to Anamika resort, a scenic island surrounded by picturesque beaches. Trent befriends guests in the resort by asking them their names and occupations. One of the kids he befriends is Idlib, the resort manager's nephew. Guy and Prisca are on the brink of a divorce and it is later revealed that Prisca is suffering from a tumor, but they set this fact aside so they could enjoy their last vacation as family together.
The following morning, the resort manager sends them to a secluded beach. Unbeknownst to these families, their lives are about to take a fast forward literally when they discover that everyone in the beach is ageing at a rapid rate.
The premise of the movie got me interested after I watched the trailer. At the end of the movie, it was revealed that the beach is used by scientists to test the efficacy of their newly concocted medicine. The people they sent to the beach have some sort of illness, Prisca has a tumor, Charles is battling schizophrenia, Crystal has Hypocalcemia, Patricia suffers from Epilepsy, while Mid-Sized Sedan has Hemophilia. Before heading to the beach, they were given medicine in the form of cock tails. Since the beach accelerates time, these scientists can observe if their medicine is working. What takes months and years, only takes hours to test in the beach.
I just couldn't help but think, why were they keeping this a secret? Why do they have to lure unsuspecting guests, when I'm pretty sure there are countless of dying people who would donate their bodies for this noble cause? Maybe the company wants to be the first to develop the cure to various illnesses in hopes of also getting a patent? I don't know.
Old gives me "Lost" vibes and it's the type of horror that I never expected. I think the movie is worth watching till the very end.
